Where to find information.

Hi guys, its Tim here bringing you another post.

Just a quick one.

Todays post is about all the places that you can find information about the latest parts and upcoming releases.

Video reviews: 3dgameman is constantly sent the latest parts right to his door. He films unboxing of all parts and shows every feature and device that comes with each part. His reviews on cases are very useful and should be considered watching before purchasing the case you have your eyes set on.

Web articles: Guru3d and Tomshardware are two of my favorite sites to read reviews on parts that I find interesting. Otherwise, just search Google for the part you are interested in and a review is bound to show up.

There are hundreds of options too choose from but these are just a small sample of some of the better sites.

If you have your own sources of great information about gadgets and PC parts please share with us is the comment section.

I'VE GOT THE POWER

Hi guys, Tim here bringing you a quick post about power supplies.

When I'm building a new PC, there are two things i like to future proof. These are the case and PSU.

Choosing the right power supply is very important during initial construction. You need to find something that wont burn out and will be able to power everything you throw at it and more.

Brands: Brand name plays a big role in deciding which power supply you should get. Buying a generic PSU could lead to disastrous results. some of the brand names I trust are: Thermaltake, Corsair and Coolermaster. There are some more less known brands that produce fine PSUs, however, research should be conducted before choosing these brands.

Power: Wattage plays a big role in future proofing or in power hungry rigs. Making sure you have what you need is imperative especially in multi GPU systems.

Modular design: A modular designed power supply can be very helpful for people working with small cases. Power supplies with large wattage tend to clog up cases with too many cables. Being able to remove these cables when appropriate cuts down on clutter and avoids decreasing airflow.

If you have your own say on power supplies or would like to mention other brands you have please leave a comment.

From the soil.

Hi guys, it's Tim again bringing you another post from JWTechParts.

Todays post is about a man's DIY project that was started over a year ago. His idea? Geothermal CPU cooling system.

What is it? From what I gathered it is a water based cooling system that pumps water through long piping underground in order to cool down the liquid, this liquid is then flows over a heat exchange point in order to bring the temperature of the CPU down.

All the information about how he did it can be found at http://www.overclock.net/cooling-experiments/563762-geothermal-cooling.html.

This truly is a fantastic project that has shown very interesting and successful results. I can not even comprehend going to this effort to bring my CPU temp down (i'm still on stock cooling). However, for all those DIYers out there this is definitely a project worth looking at.

For a little entertainment

Hi guys, its Tim here from jwtechparts bringing you another review.

The item we are looking at today is the WD TV Live Plus media player. I have truly been a fan of hard drive media players since there initial release. however, they always had a disappointing feature. whether it was that the menu was poorly organized, the control didn't work properly or playback was pathetic, I had always been interested in the technology. Thats why when a big name brand such as WD decided to release one I knew there was a future in these device.

The WD TV Live Plus features a wide range of playable codecs and subtitle languages (assuming included with the file) with up to 1080p HD output. Network capability with online functions (eg youtube, netflix, facebook). Now I recall the device being capable of loading HD youtube videos online however I think that feature was excluded later on for unknown reasons.

As you can see there is not a whole lot of options at the back as far as compatibility purposes go, however if you want 1080p playback its best to use HDMI anyway.

The playback on this device is seemless with fantastic audio playback as well.

If you happen to have an HDTV and a spare $150 hanging around i would definitely reccomend the WD TV Live Plus.

If you have another brand or model of media player please leave a comment, otherwise just a nice word.

Bye.

A look at sandy bridge performance

Hi guys, Tim here again with a quick update on the sandy bridge architecture and the second generation i5/i7 core processors.

These new release cores are already creating a lot of hype as many of us had been eagerly awaiting their release.

SB (Sandy Bridge) Core i5 and i7 based processors will have four physical (execution) CPU cores each capable of one hyper-thread (making 4 physical cores and 8 logical cores hyper-threaded), they include integrated graphics and a memory controller. Like other 1st generation Nehalem derivatives, SB will feature Intel Turbo Boost which has been further developed and is now at revision 2.0.
guru3d.com

I have gone to the effort of finding another graph showing the intense improvements of these new processors also from guru3d.com

As you can see the 2nd generation i5 and i7 CPU hold considerable advantages over the previous generation almost doubling the 3dmark score of my i7 920. These CPUs are definitely a feature you should look for in your next purchase.

Please leave comments about any more information or your experience with these products or just a nice word.

GETTING MAC'D OUT

Hi guys, Tim here with a strange post today.

Today I will be going through one of the topics you wont see to often on this blog, and that is the entire Apple catalog.

I must admit I am not too big  a fan of the Mac technology (personally find it over priced and under powered). However, there definitely are some major upsides to the apple range. The main plus being its ability to sync with other Mac products in the area.

You can have

  • The iMac
  • The MacPro
  • The iTouch
  • The iPhone
  • The iPad
  • The Macbook
  • Apple TV
  • Time capsual
  • And many others

I am not one to go out and get these products just because they are considered hip. However, I must applaud apples ability to sync all these devices together to create 'The MAC'D Out Home'. I have experienced some of these houses before and the convenience is just magnificent. It seems the more apple products you get the more each one becomes more convenient.

My only complaint? The price. It will cost you thousands upon thousands of dollars to achieve this kind of connection between your devices. Something I just don't have.

Am I saying I'm a Mac fan? No, far from it. What I am saying is if you have the paper to pay for this kind of household setup, then by all means do as you wish. However for those of us who are living borderline poverty, I would suggest you find other means of becoming a gadget geek.

Wireless GTX 460 GPU

Hi. Tim here. Just a quick one today.

Todays post is about one of the more innovative components I have seen for a long time.

The KFA geforce GTX 460 WHDI.

Basically the point of this device is the ability to turn any TV or screen into a wireless monitor for your PC with transmittable quality up to 1080P high definition. this is a fantastic device if you have a nice HDTV in your living room located 15-20m away from your basement dwelling PC. Imagine the possibility of streaming anything you can do on your PC to the entertainment area. This device offers all sorts of possibilities. Obviously this device has a small target audience, however, an attractive item to say the least.

I am not sure of the estimated price of this card but it is definitely something to look out for.

If you have anymore information about the product or would just like to say something, please leave a comment.

TIM'S RIG

Hi its Tim here again from JWTechParts bringing you another post about PC builds. Todays post will be about my current rig and its specs.

Specs:
Thermaltake armor+ 6000BWS case
OCZ GameXtreme 1010W power supply
ASUS P6T Motherboard
3x 1G OCZ DDR3 1600mhz triple channel memory
Intel Core i7 920 Processor LGA1366 2.66GHz
ATI HD5770
Stock cooling

Some pics

Sorry about the quality of the photos. I was unable to find a camera anywhere so i had to use my webcam.

As you can see from the interior of the case, this thing is huge. An enormous working space with a very well designed cable routing system.

Yes, I got bored one day and decided to solder a different color of lights to the side fan from its original blue to this blood red.

There are quite a few changes i would like to make to my build. for example better cooling so that i can overclock, more fans ect...

Sorry I cant go on much more about my rig but if you would like to leave a comment about any suggestions or want to show off your own PC please go ahead.

UM....WUT

Hi it's Tim here. Just a quicky. Today im going to be looking at some more cases. however, the cases I am showing you today are not your usual chassis. this will be a list of some of the very unique cases available for sale.

Antec SKELETON

I don't know what i'm looking at. from what i can see this case was built for portability and product testing. with its open case design and odd choice of air flow, the Antec skeleton is truly unique.

Thermaltake LEVEL 10 Extreme Gaming Station Case

What is this I dont even... its definitely eye catching.

Thermaltake Mozart TX

This thing is an absolute behemoth. The Thermaltake Mozart TX case stands very tall and very wide. this case is capable of hosting two entire rigs inside.

These are some of the strangest cases i have seen. unfortunately i have never had the chance to work on any of these cases, so i am unsure of the practicality of these chassis.

Please leave a comment below telling us about your experience with strange and unique cases or just put in your work about these .... these.... things.

JUST IN CASE

Hi it's Tim here from JWtechparts

Todays post is all about PC cases. I am a firm believer that the case is the foundation to any computer. I personally have felt that a strong case with easy access has been and is an important feature to any hardcore PC upgrader. When selecting a case, I always like to future proof mine by getting something that can go the distance no matter how large the components are inside.

So today I will show you some of my favorite cases from some of the more popular brands on the market that will catch peoples attention at your next LAN party.
(note all cases are desinged for ATX or eATX motherboards.)

Thank you to Umart.com.au for the supplied pictures.

Antec Dark Fleet DF-85 Gaming Case

Antec TWELVE HUNDRED Full Tower Gaming Case

CoolerMaster COSMOS S 1100 Full Aluminium Black Case

Thermaltake Armor+ VH6000BWS Black Steel Case (my case)

There are many other cases that could be displayed in this post however these are the cases that have caught my attention build wise, price and aesthetics. there will be many people out there wondering why i haven't included any Lian Li cases in this post. the main reason is that i have never had the experience to work with one mainly due to there high price.

The Thermaltake armor+ 6000BWS is the current build that i am using at the moment. it is a HUGE full tower case with plenty of work space and a removable motherboard tray. The case includes front side and rear cooling with a large 23 cm fan on the side. As far as i'm aware the case is capable of supporting up to 6 case fans alone and support for 7+ hard drives.

I'm sorry about my late submission and will make sure to release my next post on time.

My next post will be the contents and performance of my own pc.

P.S. Please leave a comment telling us about what case you use or some of the other cases you are interested in.

GRAPHICS WARS

In this day and age where games are becoming more and more advanced as well as intense we find ourselves looking for the some of the best technology we can find to have that slight upper hand on the rest of the competition. in the world of 3d gaming one of the essential foundations we need is a quality component to run the game. One of these components are GPUs.

Todays entry is about the top of the line Graphics cards available on the market today.

After some research most people will come down to the conclusion of these four cards:

ATI 5970
ATI 6970

NVIDIA 580

ASUS ARES ATI 5870X2

after looking though some detailed reviews of the cards I have dug out this graph from http://www.GURU3D.com

Battlefield Bad Company 2
Unfortunately the ATI 6970 doesn't make an appearance however you can see from this graph that the ASUS ARES has quite the advantage. The ASUS ARES makes an astounding effort to push frame rates high (i guess it must be expected of the limited edition card).

We want to hear from you.
Reply to this post with a comment of the cards you are running.
