From the soil.

Hi guys, it's Tim again bringing you another post from JWTechParts.

Todays post is about a man's DIY project that was started over a year ago. His idea? Geothermal CPU cooling system.

What is it? From what I gathered it is a water based cooling system that pumps water through long piping underground in order to cool down the liquid, this liquid is then flows over a heat exchange point in order to bring the temperature of the CPU down.

All the information about how he did it can be found at http://www.overclock.net/cooling-experiments/563762-geothermal-cooling.html.

This truly is a fantastic project that has shown very interesting and successful results. I can not even comprehend going to this effort to bring my CPU temp down (i'm still on stock cooling). However, for all those DIYers out there this is definitely a project worth looking at.

  1. looks great, i wish i had water cooling - my cpu fan's too loud

  2. That's pretty cool.. wonder how well it works? Would definitely be worth the time if it works well enough.

  3. Boy, this looks like a hardcore project for lowering CPU temperatures! Thanks for posting this!

  4. That is a lot of work to cool your computer. a little too much

  5. that's pretty serious..renting heavy machinery just to cool down your computer? any word on how well it worked?

  6. that's INSANE! the guy is brilliant!

  7. That's strange, I never would've thought to cool my PC with water, seeing as how water in your PC is typically a bad thing, haha. Genius!

  8. Amazing stuff, too bad I suck at diy things.

  9. wow this is a really awesome idea! Thanks for sharing it!

  10. this is a great DIY. there are so many things in our homes that need to be either hotter or cooler, i think an efficient exchange of thermal energy could decrease energy consumption massively.

  11. this does not work. the same as having a giant reservior will not work either.

  12. Wow, that looks intense. If I overclocked like a mofo, I would do this.

  13. that's crazy, my friend and I once built a computer submerged in mineral oil more for the visual effect instead of any cooling functionality, maybe we should've invested out time in a project like this lol

  14. Wow, this is just ridiculous, that's an enormous amount of effort just for cooling. I wonder how much all of this ended up costing...

  15. Should have brought a bigger fan.

  16. I hope I'll never have to resort to that for my cpu

  17. Well, the name alone its super cool. "Geothermal CPU cooling system"

  18. That is really bizarre. So costly, I'd imagine.

  19. wow, great idea. It seems nice and modular!

  20. My God the idea is amazing, but it would be costly and time consuming just to cool down the CPU.

  21. looks cool but is very impractical

  22. Wow, I feel like it'd be easier/cheaper just to go with a traditional water cooling rig...

  23. looks like some good ideas there man

  24. I'd rather buy a new rig than spend this much work and money on an old machine, like seamagpie said, impractical

  25. This is used in home cooling systems...pretty awesome idea to use it for computer cooling.

  26. Wow that's some crazy stuff right there!

  27. Thats brilliant! Extremely low cost, and minimal power required, just the pump. I've seen this with AC units, but thats true ingenuity.

  28. i never had this problem before but thanks for the info!

  29. "Geothermal CPU cooling system."

I couldn't believe what I was reading... Brilliant. Wile E. Coyote would be proud.
